How a Baseball Depth Chart Organization Works

The depth chart is one of the most important things used for a baseball team. All baseball rosters must have a depth chart in that it will help to get a team to see how the roster is going to work over different times. A baseball depth chart organization works in that there are starters, relief players and various different positions for pitching.

First, there is the pitching rotation. There are generally five starting pitchers on each team. Some teams can do with only four, but five is the general rule of thumb. It is also recommended because it allows for starting pitchers to be able to rest properly.

Next is the bullpen. On all baseball rosters a certain number of pitchers will be required, and overall twelve is the main number. Therefore, all teams will have at least seven relief pitchers. These pitchers can come from different levels of work, but every team must have a closer that works in the later parts of games.

The starting players will be next for consideration. Since a roster requires nine position players this means that there will need to be eight players outside of the pitching rotation at starting positions. For teams in the American League a designated hitter will be used.

Also, with a team requiring twenty five people on a roster there will generally be thirteen position players on a team. This means that there will be five bench players for positions outside of pitcher. Four will be used in the American League because of the designated hitter rule.

While the backup positions can vary by each team it is generally best that all areas of the game are properly followed in terms of backup players. A backup catcher is generally used for all teams because of the risk of playing the position on the body over longer periods of time. Also, one or two outfielders will be used as backup players as a means of giving tired ones a rest.

Multiple baseball rosters can be used for depth charts according to details on the opposing team as well. The information on the opposing pitcher is also used for baseball rosters in their depth charts. When the team is facing a left handed pitcher the depth chart will be organized so that more right handed batters are used. Switch hitting batters can be used too.

That is how a baseball depth chart organization will work. A certain amount of pitchers and position players will be used for a depth chart, and all baseball rosters will need to have some backup position players. The choices that the team makes is up to the managers and other involved with the team.
